Pickett Rick

So, a while back when I was visiting my “BFF” Sharon in Cali I met Rick, her roomie, and artist in residence. Rick, among his many talents, draws sweet little creatures which you can check out at

I decided to adopt a creature and let it live on my guitar in sticker form. And there he lived happily.

A few days ago, I was sitting in a stupor on my couch. The creature stared blankly at me from across the room. I stared back. He won the staring contest, and as a prize I decided to immortalize him in puppet shape.

And here he is - Pickett Rick!

And then our little farmer had a little trouble.

Kookla

             Kookla

Sometimes, when you become known for your ability to use scissors and a glue gun, people around you get a bit demanding. These people are even more demanding when they are related to you, and happened to give you the very gift you give to old sweaters, that is, the glorious gift of life.

And so it was that one Sunday afternoon, my mother informed me that she needed a puppet. This puppet had about two hours to be created, because she was leaving at 3 o’clock to visit a friend whose daughter was to recieve the yet unstitched present. I knew this particular little girl, Talia, who loved books more than anything in her 7-year old world. On previous visits, Talia and I had sat for hours either reading Shel Silverstien’s poems aloud or making fantastic crayon masterpieces. It would be an honor to make this lovely child a friend, so I took on the challenge. Speed puppeting!

As a result, we got Kookla.

We immediately set about teaching Kookla proper manners and such. We amused her with children’s toys and how to play with them:

This is an amazing act of simplicity! The coolest paper hat making I’ve seen so far. I made one out of old newspaper comics, and some wallpaper samples salvaged from the trash-o.

Dr. Starpuss

It’s nice to have a doctor do a house-call nowadays when I have no insurance to speak of. But Dr. Starpuss’s checkup wasn’t exactly what I had in mind.

Gulliver

We met at the bar downstairs. He was rowdy with his Brooklyn accent and long stories, but by the end of the night we were buds.

sandlady

Nowhere near summer, but I can’t wait for shore time. The beach also comes with another option for sustainable artistry: sand sculpture. Sure, this stuff is temporary fun, and you can’t wrap it and send it off to mom, or sell it at a fair, but you can get your hands dirty and satisfy your creative self. Sometimes it’s a good reminder and practice - to create something and then let go of it.

Gary

Gary (the demon)

Gary is a very well mannered demon. He likes kittens and killer bees. He’s Becky’s boyfriend, but doesn’t know it yet. gary the demon

Gary was designed by Joe Fisher, while I was working on Becky. He was a tough one because of the horns, and might still need some teeth. Another corduroy creation made from old pants, with a little felt and some pipe cleaners to hold up the horns. To see this guy flirt, check out the puppet gallery. :)
